WICO is a data collection, monitoring and analysis system which, through a flexible and innovative architecture, is applicable to many different and incompatible contexts, thanks to a plug-in system which allows detecting any type of event, e.g. displacements and accelerations of buildings, for their static control and seismic risk analysis; operating temperatures, output power, solar radiation, etc., in the management of a photovoltaic module installation; analysis of the soil and environmental conditions for the control of high-quality agricultural crops.
The distinctive feature of the product is its architecture, which allows its use for the detection and analysis of the data acquired from a wide range of different types of sites, each being different due to its specific control and measurement needs. The operation of the system is described in the following diagram.

In a typical scenario, the data gathered by the sensors, distributed on the different sites to be monitored, are sent to the control centre (via a transmission channel provided by the system, both wire line and wireless). The SOC (System Operation Centre) deals with their processing and, in case of alarms or exceeded preset thresholds, with the activation of the management and escalation strategies best suited to the specific case (sending of intervention messages, generation of reports, actions on the controlled equipments, etc.).
Maximum compatibility with the detection instruments
WICO allows supporting different detection instruments (e.g. accelerometers, thermometers, hygrometers, etc.). The inhomogeneity of the usable sensors is managed providing a generic sending of data to the “System Core”. Thus, the system does not place any constraints on the type of data received, which are processed as binary information streams, allowing supporting the widest range of detection sensors.
Complete homogenization of the data collected
The support to different detection instruments and data transfer technologies involves a need to manage highly differentiated contents which are processed by the system and transformed into a generic and standard format (XML), so that they can be further analyzed.
A wide range of data transfer technologies
Besides the support to different sensors, WICO offers different variety of terminals capable of receiving its information and alarms: system can be accessible via PC (with an HTML interface) or via mobile phone (through mobile site or via SMS). This differentiation is managed by “Input Interfaces”, whose task is to pilot at low level the data input channels (e.g. mobile phone to receive SMS messages, network adapter to receive Wi-fi).

Optimization of the analyses to the application context
The system input data come from virtually very different sites (buildings or monuments, amongst others). It is therefore possible to develop special plug-ins that implement the specific data analysis and control logic for the site under monitoring. This allows monitoring the different sites connected to the system with the most appropriate measurement instruments and applying analysis algorithms calibrated case by case.
